Summer, Day One: Ouch!
Mari called me from the Emergency Room at Mercy Hospital around noon today to report that she had taken Emilio there because he fell while playing at Wintersmith Park and opened a gash on the top of his head. When I got there to pick up Nina and Pablo, the medical staff was waiting for the topical anesthesia to come in from Walgreen's. When the medicine finally came in, they applied four staples to the wound.
Emilio just told me that on a pain scale of 1-10, the first staple was a 9, the next an 8, the next a 7, and the last one a 6.
Doctor's orders: no baths, only showers for the next 10 days. And no swimming in public swimming pools while we're on vacation. [Sad emoticon]
In the picture at left, Emilio is pointing to the "I'm a Mercy Kid sticker on his chest. He's still wearing the hospital bracelet they gave him. Nina told me she was "sad" and "scared" when Emilio got hurt. Pablo said he was afraid Emi was going to die.
Pabi and Nina are napping now, but they will be happy to see him when they wake up.

Operation Ukelele
For the past week, Emilio has been practicing every day on the ukelele so that he could play enough to accompany himself on the intro section of the song he signed up to sing in the 2nd grade talent show.

The Spring 2014 Blue Dragons: Undefeated

The Season Ender: An Undefeated Season on the Line (Season Five, Game Six)
From what we've heard, Orange gave Lime a tough game, and we beat Lime by a single point. It's getting hot; this is our second game of the day; and we'll be without Kiki. Duh-Ra-Ma!
Emilio knows that Malachi's goal kicks will go long, and his positioning takes account of that. After fielding the kick, he has an open field before him and delivers his first goal of the game. After two earlier scores from teammates, it's now Turquoise 3, Orange 0.
Oops. After an own goal, Emi scores his second. It's now 5-0, Turquoise.
One minute later, Emilio intercepts the kick-off and delivers his third. It's now 6-0, Turquoise.
Emi's fourth follows an intercepted goal kick in the second half.
Number five is a coast-to-coast crosser following an intercepted throw-in.
"Be ready, be ready, be ready" for number six.
Number seven finds its way through the wall following a neat set-up by Lane.
Malachi ended up scoring two, but it was not enough to blemish the Blue Dragon record.
In the six games of his fifth season, Emilio scored 32.
In 38.5 games over five seasons, Emilio has scored 173 goals (Season #1: Lemon Spring--undefeated: 44 goals; #2: Silver Fall--27 goals; #3: Silver Spring--17 goals; #4: Turquoise Fall--undefeated--53 goals).

Olivia and Uncle Brian have come up from Fort Worth for the day, just to see Pablo and Emilio play. They'll catch a season-ending double-header from Emilio with an undefeated record on the line in scorching 90-degree heat.
Tyler Walker intercepts the goal kick, Emi chases the ball down in the corner, takes the defender back towards the center, turns her around and delivers a shot through the back door, threading a needle between two defenders and a goalie to the far corner of the net for his first score of the game. Impressive.
One minute later, Emi intercepts the goal kick and lofts his second score into the net.
Two minutes later, the U-8 version of a jump-ball following a hand-ball violation matches Emi and Eva. Though Eva gets the jump on him, Emi chases the ball down in the corner, takes control and goes coast-to-coast before angling in a corner shot from the sharpest of side angles. This is the one admirers were talking about after the game.
One minute later: I like this one because Emilio follows a header with a thigh/knee touch that centers the ball. The play ends with a long scoring strike by Tyler Bratton.
Emi intercepts a goal kick and delivers a sliding cross-over in the dirt. That's his fifth score of the game. (I didn't push down hard enough on the button and missed recording #4!).
Emi goes into the corner to pick a pocket following a goal kick and sneaks #6 in between the goalie and the post.
Emi picks off another goal kick, delivers goal #7 just before getting crunched, pops up, wins the race back to center field, gets pulled, picks up a drink from Uncle Brian, and almost leaves him hanging before delivering the high five.
Back in the game, Emi fights for position on a corner kick and gets kneed in the privates while setting up a score by Lane. He makes it to the sideline before giving in to the pain. He will soon be ready to play again, but Coach Bratton wants him to save energy for the last game of the season against a tough orangs squad led by our old teammate, Malachi.
Through five games, Turqouise is undefeated, and Emilio has 25 goals.
